Let’s chat about how to find your style! It took me a long time to come to terms with my personal style. Therefore, I spent years wearing what I thought was cute but would be uncomfortable. I would buy bodycon dresses and hate the way my body looked. Or see something that I really liked but talked myself out of it because it’s not what I truly wanted. Within the last few months, I brought a whole new wardrobe from a certain website, to only rotate a few pieces from it. I became disappointed with most of the clothes that I purchased from them.

Next, I had to sit down and truly figure out what my style is. I had to think, where do I get my style inspiration from? Honestly, it comes from Audrey Hepburn. There’s something about a good timeless classic look. Her style on and off the screen is everything that I love. I remember watching her movies and being in awe of how elegant and gorgeous she looked. But, I do throw a modern twist on those timeless classics. I love to wear a super cute heel, a nice ballet flat or loafer. I like to call my style classy chic.

Why did I pick this style?

Well like I said Audrey Hepburn is my inspiration. And I wanted a style that was going to make me comfortable, accentuate my assets without revealing too much. Most of all when I think of how I look there’s a certain image that I see. I have a way that I want to present myself as well.

In the past, I saw different women and said to myself ‘I want to dress like her’. After that, I tried to perpetuate what I see and it didn’t look as good on me. Then I’m stuck with clothing that I will never wear again. I can’t be the only one who has done this? Anybody? No? Ok. Well after I had my son, I lost a lot of the baby weight but still couldn’t fit my clothes properly. So I resorted to wearing clothes that would hide the extra bulges I still carried. All that did was make me look like a big box. This is what led me to find my style.

When I sat down to figure out what suited me best there were a couple of questions that needed to be answered. What celebrity style have I always admired most? Is there somewhere I can find this style? Will I be able to create some signature pieces with this style? Will this style look good on me? I answered these questions and got my personal style. Now let me walk you through how to find your style.

Jump on Pinterest!

My next step was to find the style that I liked and make a board for that style. I looked for pictures of Audrey and hit a gold mine. To my surprise, there were way more pictures of her then I expected. So I went through them and selected the ones that matched my idea. Then, I thought about ways I was able to modernize it just a little. Now, this is when you want to create a style inspiration board.

Plan out your wardrobe with this board. Pick out a couple of outfits that are going to be your staples too. You can also find out what you prefer to wear with this board. I prefer to wear a cute pair of jeans or pants over a dress. But I also love a sexy dress at times. Do you like bright colors and prints or do you want to stick to neutrals? These are all answers that you can discover when making your board.

What celebrity style do you admire most?

What picture from your inspiration board stood out to you? Is their style one that you can see yourself wearing? How do you look in that style? I would suggest that you pick a picture from your board of that person. Make sure it’s a picture in an outfit that you really love. Go to the store and try to find pieces that closely match your picture. Try them on and see how you feel in the outfit.

Now is the time to clean out your closet!

You have to make room in your closet for that new wardrobe, right? Cleaning your closet is going to make room for that much-preferred wardrobe. Using the Pinterest board that you just made, look in your closet to see what suits your new-found style. Then see what doesn’t. What you get rid of sell them to a thrift store or donate them. But after this exercise, there’s no need to keep those clothes.

Signature Pieces!

As I mentioned before, you should pick a few pieces to be your signature outfits. In this step, you want to literally put an outfit together, jewelry and all. Think back at your style and see what kept showing up for you. Were you a jeans and t-shirt kind of person or did you wear dresses more? And see what was a repetitive style that you had and put it together with your new style. I personally love a cute blazer with skinny jeans and heels.

Be versatile.

You want to make sure to have pieces that you can wear different ways. Let’s say three different ways. Undoubtedly, being versatile is a good idea to make your wardrobe last longer. It should be noted that if you can’t be versatile then your wardrobe will get boring quickly.  Listen to your judgment. This is going to be an adjustment. Trying to find your style is going to take commitment and some work. One thing you really need to do is trust your judgment. Since you’re starting off fresh you might want to talk yourself out of buying certain pieces or your whole wardrobe. But don’t do it. Stick to what you came up with and be happy. It’s what fits you!
